The National Archives

Based at Kew in London, the National Archives is the repository of much of our documentary history.

You can search for archives on, for example, historic people in the United Kingdom.
Other archives, based in our counties, can also be searched from here.

The British Library

With roots extending back centuries and with sites in London and Yorkshire, the British Library collect everything written today, tomorrow, and decades into the future.

They have millions of books, and have everything from newspapers to sound recordings, patents, prints and drawings, maps, and manuscripts.

Free to use and open to everyone.

The British Museum

An international museum based in London which holds a wide variety of the material culture of the United Kingdom as well as the rest of the world.

The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A)

A unique international museum based in London. Founded on the principles of the Great Exhibition of 1851, the museum contains global artefacts of material culture plus displays and information on the materials and techniques used to create them. Its scope covers from about 4000 BC to the present day. Materials & Techniques information can also be found on their website.

Institute of Historical Research (IHR)

Online resource for all those interested in history, including specific interest resources for students and professionals of history.

Buckinghamshire Archives

Currently based in Aylesbury, this is the primary resource for our county information. You can search for archives online and book appointments to visit those archives. Additionally, the archives hold reading room information such as directories of historic businesses and business owners, local newspapers and the publications of the Bucks Record Society.

Discover Bucks Museum

Formerly known as Bucks County Museum, this museum has collections covering the county in geology, natural history, prehistoric and historic peoples and their artefacts. It is based in Aylesbury.

Buckinghamshire’s Heritage Portal

On this site you can search for specific archaeological sites, historic buildings and landscapes. These are part of the Historic Environment Records which was formerly known as the Sites and Monuments Records.

Buckinghamshire’s Historic Towns

Following an extensive period of research into our county towns, detailed archaeological and historic information on 30 settlements plus Milton Keynes is presented on this site.

The Wilberforce Diaries Project

William Wilberforce was a Member of Parliament for forty-five years (1780-1825). From 1789 onwards, he was internationally renowned as the parliamentary spokesman for the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade. He was active in numerous other causes – political, philanthropic and religious – including the reformation of manners, penal law reform, the Sierra Leone colony, missionary and Bible societies, and animal welfare.

The People of 1381

This is the website of an innovative new research project set to produce the most comprehensive interpretation of the Peasants’ Revolt to date. The revolt was one of the largest popular uprisings in medieval Europe and rocked the country in the summer of 1381.
