The Burden of History in African Literature
Earlier in the year (2020), the BBC showed a documentary entitled: Africa Turns the Page: the novels that shaped a continent
Dr Msiska was one of the featured academic consultants. The documentary dealt with the issues arising over how Africa’s history has been presented to the West by Western writers. The consultants discussed the need to look at African history from the writings of Africans themselves.
Dr Msiska will look at the portrayals of Nigerian society in the work of the great author and, arguably, the founder of the African novel, Chinua Achebe. He will also look at the works of the Kenyan writer Ngugi wa Thiong’o. Both writers are from former British colonies. Dr Msiska will look at how these writers portrayed their countries’ pre and post colonial histories.
